A perfectly functioning 500 kWp system and one with a failed string inverter, two shaded panel rows and a degraded module cluster can look identical from the outside. The difference shows up only in the data — and only if someone is looking at the right data, at the right granularity, with the right benchmarks.
The industry average for undetected underperformance in unmonitored or passively monitored commercial solar systems is 8–12% of annual yield. On a 500 kWp system generating 450,000 kWh/year, that is 36,000–54,000 kWh lost — at €0.22/kWh avoided cost, between €7,900 and €11,900 per year. Across a 25-year system lifetime, that is a six-figure loss from an entirely preventable cause.
Effective monitoring operates at the string level, not just the inverter level. String-level data allows a trained analyst to identify partial shading, soiling, cell degradation and connection faults that would be invisible at system level. The ETURN Live platform captures data at 5-minute intervals and applies performance ratio benchmarking against irradiance data from co-located sensors — not modelled averages.
ETURN Live was built internally because no available third-party platform met our requirements for granularity and benchmarking accuracy. It ingests data from all major inverter brands and stores 10 years of operational history per system. Our monitoring specialists review fleet-wide performance daily and dispatch maintenance teams proactively — before clients are aware of any issue.
"Monitoring is not a dashboard. It is a managed service. The dashboard is the output; the value is the specialist who interprets it and acts on it."
